REJECT AND REFLECT OR WAIT AND WONDER

Ever wondered about the kind of response you would prefer to get after submitting an application that was neither rejected/nor approved? well,

Let’s get to it!!!

Today, I’m sharing a pivotal chapter from my post-CyberGirls Cybersecurity journey.

Do you prefer a straightforward “Unfortunately, we’re unable to offer you a place in XYZ” — giving you a clear answer and a chance to think about why it didn’t work out? Or, would you prefer an “After a thorough review of applications, we have placed you on our reserve list in XYZ” feedback — keeping the door open for potential future opportunities and allowing for a more hopeful but uncertain outlook?

Wondering why I asked? I’ll tell you shortly. Stay with me:

My most recent goal was to secure a spot in the Cyber Talent Academy, a joint program conducted by SANS in collaboration with Allianz. The academy offers accelerated training and Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) serving as a launchpad for impactful careers in cybersecurity, all at no cost.

As part of the application process, I submitted a written statement outlining my motivations for joining the program and my commitment to a career in cybersecurity.

After the application, I received an invitation to take the CyberTalent Enhanced (CTE) Aptitude Assessment — covering questions across key cybersecurity domains such as Networking Concepts, Defense in Depth, Internet Security Technologies, Communications Security, Operating Systems, and Information Security Aptitude CTE.

Honestly, tackling this assessment was one of the toughest experiences I’ve had in my journey. A few days after the assessment, I received feedback indicating that I’d been placed on a reserve list, with a possibility of acceptance. While this isn’t a definitive acceptance, it also means the door hasn’t been closed entirely.

Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation? I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences in the comment section below.

Navigating this assessment, I came to realize more and more that aiming for the stars is a painstaking but necessary process. It brings structure, sheds light on my existing knowledge, and pinpoints areas that demand further growth and development.

While I eagerly await the final word on my application, my journey to mastery continues. In Cybersecurity, constant learning, goal-setting, and reaching new levels are non-negotiable. The path may be challenging, but the rewards are worth every effort.

In conclusion, my friends, I’m realising that our journey is not defined solely by endpoints but by the lessons, growth, and experiences we accumulate along the way. I’m on a mission to savor the journey and relish the sacredness of each moment! and I encourage you to do the same in your unique cybersecurity endeavors.

Keep soaring,

Elizabeth Ekedoro

PS: I’m extending an invitation for you to share your professional goals or updates on your respective journeys. Your achievements matter, and I’m here to offer support and encouragement.
